In response to posters on Laila’s site, a blogger’s site of highly intelligent and factual information about BC politics which I highly recommend people visit and read (especially the 100 reasons the Lieberals should go) I had this to say.
I want to post this on my site and link it rather than have a long-winded reply to a blog on another site.
My opinion is that pulling a Quebec-ist threatening of separation from the Canadian Federation is very divisive, and goes against the “unification” that is so badly needed amongst the provinces. Regardless of whom is at the helm, we are all Canadians, and therefore need to stay together. Granted, what happens here in BC is far different from what happens in New Brunswick for example, but the same rules should still apply to the sustainability of our environment and resources here, as there.
What I would suggest is going back to the drawing board and totally revising the Constitution to reflect current dated affairs and scientific and “proven” values around human rights and equality, and understanding of environment “frailty” that should supersede any corporate designs, and reestablishing the people of Canada’s control over their own country, such as allowing a recall or snap election to be called on both the provincial and federal level when we have scenarios like Harper’s ominous-bus of environment and human protection/welfare gutting, as well as our (in)famous Christy “bottle and cap farts” Clark selling out to communist nationals.
I do not believe we can “grow” or progress past the stage we are on, unless we totally restructure the political scene, removing “cash-lobbying” and profit-driven MP’s and MLA’s who reside in the government as little more than global corporate spies, and putting the veto power back into the people’s hands and not all the power of the country controlled by one person’s “vision”.
It’s far harder than it sounds too, because 80% of the sheeple in this country DON’T CARE, at least on a level that surpasses their consumer lifestyles or financial worth attitudes. Sure they’ll bitch, but (in many proven cases) for most it’ll be a cold day in hell when we can “unplug” this vicious mix-master that threatens our very existence on this planet because it will affect their false programming of “what matters” in their everyday lifestyle.
When we can stop thinking in terms of “financial value” when it comes to individuals in humanity, to the environment that feeds, clothes, mother’s humanity and ALL creatures, and just do what’s needed without a “dollar sign” next to the options, that’s when we’ll start making progress in society again.
Until then.. it’s going to take more than a few of us to take down these greedy, corporate “owned” world leaders, but it’s so worth the effort and tears that it will cost us.
